a post from Mark, which he posted in East Durham Detectors… Can anyone in the group help me? I’m looking to make a list of the details of colliery tub tokens from the Durham and Northumberland Coalfield for a book I’m working on. In some areas of the county, these are quite common finds, I understand. These distinctive NE tokens are usually cast white metal, like the one illustrated below, which is late Victorian or Edwardian.
The use of these tokens continued up until the 1950s/60s when the move to mechanised mining made them redundant. To help my research, I need images of any finds of these tokens and their sizes (in mm and weights if possible). I’m also building up a reference collection of them if anyone has any that they are happy to part with or sell. I’m planning to get some non-destructive metal content analysis made of them. If you can help me, drop me a PM or e-mail me at mps1965@outlook.com.
